“I still consider my work to be experimental and therefore do not currently choose to adhere to any one particular style. Working from life, drawings, sketches or photographs ( even as a starting point for the most abstract pieces) I employ techniques learned from years of practical experience and a mixture of research, observation and interpretation.

”It is vitally important for me to connect with the subject, then the painting can really take over. But first it has to develop by my own peculiar process of looking, experimenting and pacing up and down!”

Artist in Residence

Jane’s interest in painting began at the age of twelve with a trip to see Turner at The National Gallery. She gained her degree from Winchester School of Art as a mature student in 1999 and spent several years successfully designing printed textiles for furnishing.

After a summer spent gaining valuable experience painting with a group of professional artists in Falmouth, a change of direction was decided upon. Jane found working with the figure and the landscape in this environment so creatively challenging that she spent the winter months in Cornwall, for the next three years!

“Painting and drawing directly from life is an invaluable way to learn about proportion, perspective, colour, shape and texture. Practically every artist I know wishes they did, but knows that they don't, draw enough.”

At home in Sussex she now paints full-time, joining forces with retired Film Art Director, Colin Grimes to exhibit from their Open Studio in Chailey. “We both thoroughly enjoy showing our paintings in this unpretentious way.”

As Artist in Residence at Cuckfield Complementary Health Clinic since its move to Naldred Farm in 2005, Jane now has a permanent exhibition space in this lovely converted dairy.  “I have found the space itself, its openness and its confinements, a source of inspiration, which both challenges and encourages me to develop new work.”

In keeping with the concept of an Open Studio, visitors are welcome to view the paintings without obligation and Jane is always happy to discuss her work, in person, by telephone, or e-mail. She is now occasionally available for one-to-one tutoring/creative advice @ £25 per session.
